Fears of New Lockdown in Malaysia

Spiraling cases of Covid-19 in Malaysia and an upcoming address to the nation by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today has raised speculation that the country is heading toward another lockdown.

Rumours on social media alongside documents that were reported to be leaks of new lockdown documentation have increased over the weekend.

Business leaders have raised concerns that another full lockdown, as seen at the start of the pandemic, could be fatal to many businesses. Recent lockdowns in other countries have allowed more businesses to remain open although there is increasing debate if this is an approach that will help to curb the virus.

Malaysia has recorded almost 17,000 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 7 days including the highest ever daily increase last Thursday of 3,027.
