Traditionally Tet is one of the busiest periods for air travel in Vietnam as Vietnamese travel all over the country to visit relatives. A recent Covid-19 outbreak in Vietnam threatened the holiday this year.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) however have reported that Vietnamese Airlines operated just under 21,000 flights during the Tet season, 19th January to 18th February.
Both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City experienced new outbreaks of the virus recently but this did not stop the Hanoi – HCMC route continuing to be one of the busiest domestic routes in the world with over a million passengers during the month.
Vietjet Air was the busiest domestic carrier with 7,881 flights followed by Vietnam Airlines with 6,725, Bamboo Airways 4,008, Jetstar Pacific 1,640, Vasco 518 and newcomer Vietravel Air with 172.
There are currently no indications when Vietnam may start to reopen to foreign tourists as the country continues to protect itself from the worse effects of the virus.
