The increasing severity and spread of the latest Covid-19 outbreak in Thailand has raised the possibility of a new lockdown being imposed.
The number of daily new cases seems to break records each day, the latest unwanted milestone was 1,543 new cases today. The outbreak continues to raise concerns that the planned quarantine-free re-opening of Phuket in July would need to be delayed.
Government officials have confirmed today that discussions regarding a partial lockdown for Bangkok and surrounding provinces, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri and Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Further discussions are expected to take place later today with health officials prior to a meeting with the Prime Minister tomorrow.
Entertainment venues and travel restrictions have already been implemented in many areas of Thailand. Restrictions may now be extended to other areas deemed to be high-risk including restaurants, shopping malls and gyms.
Thailand has now recorded 37,453 cases of Covid-19 and 97 deaths. 13,218 are recorded as having fully recovered.
