Cambodia is understood to be investigating the feasibility of opening its borders to vaccinated foreign tourists from low-risk countries by the end of the year.

This will be the first phase of the Cambodian tourism reopening plan, part of a 2021-2025 tourism recovery roadmap.

The Cambodian Tourism Ministry is planning on working alongside provincial authorities and the vaccination commission to ensure that the local population and tourism providers are vaccinated.

It also plans on working with destination service providers to ensure that they can safely receive vaccinated tourists.

“We are working hard towards receiving international tourists, especially vaccinated tourists, in the fourth quarter of 2021.”

It is not yet clear if the plans would include a quarantine for visitors. A move that has been seen to be a major roadblock for tourists. Thailand plans to launch its sandbox project in July when Phuket is due to drop all quarantine measures for vaccinated tourists.

Just 1.3 million foreign tourists visited Cambodia last year, almost 80% fewer than in 2019, as borders were closed to the majority of people to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.
