Chiang Mai Quarantine Free Travel

Chiang Mai has confirmed that it is pressing ahead for its plans to reopen to foreign travellers from October – with limitations.

The Chiang Mai Sandbox would be part of the second phase of the Sandbox programme following Phuket which plans to have quarantine free travel from 1st July.

Unlike Phuket, where the whole island is included, the Chiang Mai Sandbox will be limited to two districts.

“The Phuket sandbox model will create opportunities for other provinces. However, we have to prepare for our reopening regardless of what happens with Phuket because the country cannot afford another lost year.”

Punlop Saejew, President Tourism Council of Chiang Mai

Mae Rim and Mae Taeng districts have low population densities and abundant natural resources making them easier to control. The plan would require around 400,000 vaccine doses to be delivered to local residents.

Tourists under the scheme must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and travel under the supervision of tour guides on designated routes.

The province is expected to initially target tourists from Asian markets potentially including China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.
