Thailand is putting enormous effort into attracting tourists back to the country.
The first month of the Phuket Sandbox saw more than 14,000 foreign tourists arriving, 1,802 of these were from the USA.
Yesterday however the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Level 4 Alert for Thailand. The highest alert possible, states that US travellers should avoid travel to Thailand, due to the high levels of Covid-19 at the current time.
The guidance continues by saying that “if you must travel to Thailand, make sure that you are fully vaccinated before travel. Because of the current situation in Thailand, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.”
The guidance is a blow to tourism authorities who regard the US as one of the main markets for relaunching tourism.
It remains to be seen what impact the guidance has on US tourists. The guidance does not require fully vaccinated travellers to quarantine on their return to the US unlike the “Red list” in the UK which would almost certainly deter most if not all travellers.
Thailand today reported its highest ever daily Covid deaths with 235 in the last 24 hours alongside 19,843 cases. The country has so far reported 795,951 cases and 6,588 deaths during the pandemic.
