Thailand has an ambitious reopening plan for tourist destinations throughout the country but the increasing Covid outbreak crisis in the country, coupled with vaccine supply issues, continues to threaten the schedule.

Hua Hin

The Hua Hin Recharge was announced in mid July with plans for reopening from 1st October. However just over a week later local officials raised concerns that they would be unable to meet that schedule.

More encouraging news is now coming out of Thailand however.

The head of Hua Hin Recharge has announced that around 90% of tourism sectors workers have now been vaccinated and more than 30% of the general population. To meet their reopening target Hua Hin needs 100% of tourism workers and 70% of the total population vaccinated.

It is hoped that if they can make the 1st October opening then up to 100,000 people will visit the area by the end of the year.

The plan is to follow the same conditions for visitors as the Phuket Sandbox, with everyone needing to be fully vaccinated and having a negative PCR test prior to arrival.

Krabi and Phang Nga

Despite rising Covid cases in many parts of the country the Phuket Sandbox Extension is planned to go ahead as planned from later in August.

The extension, would allow tourists to stay in Phuket for the first 7 days before moving to another destination for a further 7 days.

The pilot destinations are scheduled to be:

  • Krabi – Koh Phi Phi, Koh Ngai and Railay Beach
  • Phang Nga – Khao Lak and Koh Yao

The extension was originally due to start on 1st August but has been delayed.

Surat Thani

The Samui Plus reopening began on 15th July but with increased conditions compared to the Phuket model.

The Samui Plus programme has so far seen 264 foreign visitors arrive and a further 257 tourists who moved to the area following their Phuket Sandbox visit. Surat Thani is also listed as a Phuket Sandbox Extension destination.
