The news comes as the first foreign tourists land in the city state today following the launch of the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) with Germany.

Flight SQ325 is expected to arrive at 4.25pm local time in Singapore today.

Singapore has been recording in excess of 100 domestic daily cases over the last two weeks following the relaxation of many of the restrictions that had been in place to curb the rise of cases.

Lawrence Wong, Singapore finance minister and co-chair of the coronavirus task force said last week that curbs may need to be reintroduced to control the outbreak if numbers continue to increase.

There are also fears that the VTL with Germany and Brunei may be suspended and future plans delayed.

Prospective tourists may also see be put off faced with increasing cases of the virus and an increased risk of bars and restaurants being closed. Restrictions in Phuket has been stated as one of the key reasons for lower than hoped for numbers of tourists travelling to Phuket.

Singapore however has one of the highest rates of vaccination in the world with more than 80% of its population now fully vaccinated.
