REUTERS is reporting that Malaysia will reopen its borders to foreign travellers by 1st January 2022 at the latest.

The reports states that the news was announced by a government advisory council earlier today.

Government statistics in Malaysia show that more than three-quarters of Malaysia’s 32 million population are now vaccinated.

Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who chairs a council tasked with spearheading Malaysia’s economic recovery programme, told reporters that the tourism industry was recovering too slowly without foreigners and noted that operators needed time to resume businesses.

He confirmed that infection control measures such as COVID-19 tests will remain in place, with authorities to determine entry based on the COVID-19 situation in originating countries, and other factors.

No firm date has yet been announced however, other than it taking place by 1st January at the latest, so it is still too early to plan that trip. The final decision will depend on health and security agencies in the country.

Earlier this week Malaysia and Singapore announced the launch of a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) from 29th November. It is believed that similar plans are also under discussion with Indonesia.
