April Travel Guide for Southeast Asia

Here are our recommendations for where to go and what to do during April in Southeast Asia.

Thailand

Very hot in Northern Thailand now at the end of the dry season and rainfall may start to increase later in the month.

Bangkok also getting much hotter and more uncomfortable.

Temperatures also increasing in southern areas with April usually one of the hottest months of the year. Rainfall still low.

Songkran Festival marks the beginning of the Thai New Year and is one of the biggest celebrations in the country. Water is a key element of festivities so prepare to get wet as water pistols, bottles and even buckets of water will be used in many areas. Usually celebrated between 13th and 16th April.

Malaysia

One of the best times of the year to visit Malaysia with the weather generally good throughout the country. The weather can be wetter in central areas and the highlands but usually just short, sharp showers.

The Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, called Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a national holiday. 3rd May 2022, 24th April 2023, 11th April 2024.

There are a number of regional holidays in Malaysia during April.

Cambodia

The end of the dry season for much of Cambodia and temperatures can be very hot and exploring outside can be hard work for more than a short period of time.

Rainfall may increase towards the end of the month as rainy season approaches.

Khmer New Year is widely celebrated in Cambodia and many places may close as locals join in the three-day celebrations. Khmer New Year public holidays are 14th to 16th April 2022, 14th to 17th April 2023 and 13th to 16th April 2024.

Vietnam

Getting hotter in the north of Vietnam and the rains are starting especially in the far north.

Hot, dry and humid in central Vietnam.

In the south of Vietnam April is hot and humid and rainfall starts to increase as the wet season approaches.

The Hùng Kings’ Temple Festival is held in honour of the Hùng Vương or Hùng Kings. The public holiday takes place on a weekday 11th April 2022, 1st May 2023, 18th April 2024.

Singapore

There is not really a bad time to visit Singapore and April is dry and warm.

Easter is celebrated in many areas of Singapore especially Good Friday 15th April 2022, 7th April 2023, 29th March 2024.

Hari Raya Puasa is the celebration at the end of the Ramadan month of fasting. It is also known as Eid al Fitr or Hari Raya Aidilfitri. It falls on 2nd May 2022, 21st April 2023 and 10th April 2024.

Indonesia

Rainfall decreases throughout the month and days are generally sunny, warm and dry. Temperatures are increasing.

An excellent time for snorkelling, scuba diving and mountain trekking.

Good Friday is a public holiday in Indonesia. 15th April 2022, 7th April 2023, 29th March 2024.

Hari Raya Idul Fitri is an Indonesian holiday that celebrates the conclusion of the fasting month of Ramadan. 2nd May 2022, 22nd April 2023, 10th April 2024.

Lebaran is a public holiday that allows Indonesians to spend time with their friends and family members. 3rd May 2022, 23rd April 2023, 11th April 2024.

Philippines

It’s getting hot, hot, hot in the Philippines and humidity can be uncomfortable at times.

An excellent time to visit the highlands with the cooler temperatures.

Still very dry.

Araw ng Kagitingan or Day of Valor is a public holiday in the Philippines every 9th April. It commemorates the fall of the Bataan peninsula during World War II.

Easter is a major holiday in the Philippines. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday are national holidays to create a 4-day long weekend. 14th to 16th April 2022, 6th to 8th April 2023, 28th to 30th March 2024.

Eidul Fitr is an important celebration for Muslims, marking the end of the month-long fast during Ramadan. 3rd May 2022, 22nd April 2023, 10th April 2024.

Laos

April is traditionally the hottest month of the year. and temperatures in Vientiane and Luang Prabang areas around 30°C increasing further south to around 36°C.  Showers increase towards the end of the month although do not tend to be too heavy or long.

Lao New Year is one of the most important celebrations in Laos. 14th to 16th April (13th to 16th April 2024).
