Khao Lak

Khao Lak

Stunning beaches, tropical forests, national parks, Khao Lak and the surrounding area has it all. The main tourist areas are a series of villages that are easily accessible by local songthaews (taxi)

Just an hour from Phuket airport you can escape the hustle and bustle of its neighbour and experience a more authentic Thai experience on the shores of the Andaman sea.

Peak season in Khao Lak is November to February when the weather is at its driest (just 30mm and 3 days of rain in January). Temperatures are coolest as well, with highs of 34°C/93°F and never getting below around 23°C/73°F at night. Sea temperatures are nice and warm as well at around  27°C/81°F. You get plenty of sun as well with up to 10 hours a day in February. Any showers are likely to be short and heavy.

The hot season is between March and May as average temperatures of around 29°C/84°F, humidity also increases which can make it feel much more uncomfortable. Rainfall starts to increase as well with up to 24 wet days in May although showers do tend to be fairly short but can be very heavy and thundery.

The south west monsoon hits the area from June to October when rainfall can hit highs of 350mm in a month. It’s not all bad though as the rain tends to fall in the late afternoon or early evening and the rest of the day could be bathed in hot sunshine as temperatures remain in the 30’s most of the day.

Getting There

A better choice is likely to be to get a connecting flight from either Bangkok or one of the other local hubs which could well be a cheaper option as well. Transfers from Phuket airport are around an hour. Taxis and buses are available at the airport if you have not arranged a transfer.

Coverwise provide travel insurance with Covid-19 protection.

An alternative would be to fly into Krabi although transfer times will be considerably longer, around 2 and a half hours. I recommend pre-arranging a transfer as some taxis may not want the long journey or will up prices as they are unlikley to get a return fare.

Buses are available from Bangkok and take around 12 hours.

Getting Around

Hotel Shuttles– Most hotels will have a mini-bus and/or cars that provide regular trips to the centre of Khao Lak and sometimes to Phuket. They will also be able to arrange other trips for you.

Songthaew– The local taxis are a better and cheaper option in my opinion. They are available throughout the main tourist areas and you can flag one down from the side of the road. On our last trip we organised our trips with the same Songthaew driver who was reliable and very reasonably priced.

Bus – Local buses are available for longer trips and run along the main road throughout the day.

Longtail Boats – These can be booked through hotels and local agents for trips along the coast or to local islands.

Hire car or bikes – Many people like to hire a car or more commonly a motorbike or moped. It is much safer to hire these here than in the cities but be careful, even though they drive on the correct side of the road traffic laws, right of way and regulations are different. Road conditions can change quickly during rain storms. Make sure you have the correct licence, insurance and wear seat belts or helmets at all times.
